Untreated Hypothyroidism Can be a Cause of Infertility
Undiagnosed and untreated thyroid diseases such as hypothyroidism can cause infertility or miscarriages. Left unchecked, hypothyroidism can also cause heart disease, obesity and high cholesterol. As the thyroid gland produces a hormone essential for growth and proper cellular function, an underactive thyroid gland can have a bearing on a person’s fertility. This condition in which the thyroid gland fails to produce enough of the thyroid hormone can affect many parts of the body, including the metabolism and reproductive system.
Fertility is typically only affected after other less harmful hypothyroidism symptoms have appeared and no diagnosis was made or no treatment rendered. Typical symptoms include fatigue, muscle weakness, constipation, intolerance to cold, dry and rough skin, a hoarse voice and brittle hair. The symptoms may vary from mild to severe, but in the absence of other cause, a blood test should be done to check hormone levels.
There are a variety of fertility conditions and fertility problems that can affect your chances of getting pregnant. Only your doctor can give you a definite diagnosis of problems that are affecting your chances of having a baby. If you are feeling chronic fatigue despite a normal amount of rest, get your thyroid tested. If your doctor says it’s all in your head, find another doctor and explain thatyou are having difficulty getting pregnant.
