The researchers began tracking in 1984 to 538 people in more than 50 years and ran several times a week, and compared with a sedentary control group of the same magnitude as the study published in the Journal of Internal Medicine. &#8220;We were surprised because the benefits of exercise were more important than we anticipated,&#8221; said Dr. James Fries, a retired professor of medicine at Stanford University and lead author of the studies.<br />
The researchers used national mortality statistics to identify deaths among study participants. They calculated that 19 years after the start of the investigation, 34% of the sedentary group had died, against only 15% of the group who exercised regularly.<br />
Moreover, those who ran regularly began to suffer physical disabilities due to age 16 years later than the inactive.<br />
&#8220;By far, the subjects are kept in good health,&#8221; summarized Fries, 69, avid runner himself.<br />
Running not only delayed the onset of disability but the gap between the health status of running and sedentary increases with time, according to study authors.<br />
The doctor also expressed surprise because those who are still enjoying better health than sedentary when they become nonagenarians.<br />
This difference is probably explained by body mass index less than those who exercise as well as healthier lifestyles in general, he said.<br />
As expected, running regularly to reduce mortality linked to cardiovascular disease, but other studies also showed a link with a reduction in premature deaths due to cancer, neurological and infectious diseases.<br />
The research subjects, most of whom are currently seventies or eighties, responded annually to questionnaires about their ability to perform everyday tasks as walking, dressing, washing, up from a chair and gripping objects.<br />
At the beginning of the study who exercised group ran on average about four hours per week, 21 years later, it was only 76 minutes a week, but the beneficial effects on their health were maintained.<br />
At the beginning of the investigation, one of the longest conducted on the effects of exercise on aging, some of these researchers feared that the madness of the time by jogging in U.S. long-term provoked a lot of articulation problems.<br />
But these predictions were not fulfilled. Fries and his colleagues published a complementary study in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine in August, which shows that there were no increases in cases of osteoarthritis, chronic joint disease in elderly people who had run regularly.</p>
