Ginkgo is the name of an ornamental tree of 200 million years ago that still thrive in different climates around the world. Its leaves are divided into two lobes, hence the name biloba.

The extract obtained from dried leaves (known as EGb 761) has been used for its therapeutic actions for centuries, especially the traditional Chinese pharmacopoeia.

It takes approximately 18 kg of dried leaves for half a kilo of extract of Ginkgo Biloba. This extract is one of the most important anti-aging products and effective because of three reasons: 1. The main and most known feature is the ability of ginkgo to improve blood circulation.

With age, the body loses its ability to supply the tissues, especially in the brain, leading to produce cerebral ischemia. The consequences are well known: memory loss, confusion, fatigue, depression, anxiety, etc..

Ginkgo may reduce the symptoms of cerebral insufficiency, by stimulating blood vessel contraction to supply oxygen-hungry tissues of the brain, heart and limbs. This done, inter alia, to reverse the memory loss and decrease muscle soreness. Studies show that Ginkgo also inhibits the formation of blood clots that cause heart attacks or strokes.

It is also an antioxidant as much or even more potent than vitamin E. The fight against free radicals is done by blocking the destructive oxidation of cell membranes and restoring the integrity of the membranes after radical attack.

The active principles function as antioxidant flavonoids are two: the Myricetin and Quercetin. 3. Another function of ginkgo to improve the ability to receive signals from neurotransmitters, particularly serotonin, that is lost with age, which is enhanced nerve transmission.

By improving nerve transmission also favors the muscle response. In addition to its anti-aging, the ginkgo is generally used as a tonic, especially in cases of fatigue or tiredness; is very useful in times of intense activity in which we feel typical of exhaustion. Other applications worth mentioning are its effectiveness in treating asthma, allergies, colds and headaches.
